20 years ago, working from home was a novel idea. Digitization and globalization have sparked huge shifts in how we live and work. Over half of U.S. employees (56%; 75 million workers) now hold jobs and have responsibilities that could be performed, at least in part, from home. The future of work is NOW.

Employee engagement to Employee experience

While employee engagement generally focuses on productivity, employee experience is a broader term that also addresses the worker as a human. Organizations are becoming increasingly aware of the impact that employee experience has on their business. The future of work includes creating organizations where employees want to show up.

The evolution from Work-life balance to work-life integration

As work-life balance has shifted towards work-life integration, the days of 9-5 are fading. Instead of looking at work in terms of how much time it takes away from other employee responsibilities or interests, HR leaders are shifting to explore work and life as one integrated experience. COVID-19 and remote work has only accelerated this trend.

Pen and paper to digital everything

Although pen and paper will never become truly obsolete, digitization is rapidly becoming the new normal, from invoices to boarding passes viewed on smartphones and various applications for To-Do lists and project management. Digital platforms and technologies will continue to gain increased traction.

One workspace to a spectrum of spaces- the workplace revolution

Remote working has become easier than ever due to the role of technology. Instant messaging applications make even the telephone seem passe! Anyone with access to a laptop and Wi-Fi can now work effectively offsite while still remaining connected with their teams. Organizations must focus on continuing to refine these models and creating multiple workspace options for their employees as dispersed teams and remote/hybrid work models become the status quo.

Decisions based on intuition to decisions based on data

Strategic decisions have often been made based on past experience and ‘gut feel’ – intuition and emotion, if you will, with limited recourse to hard data. With the proliferation of data and insights from that data, decision-makers are now able to combine judgment with data analytics to make the best possible decisions.

COVID-19 has dramatically changed or at least accelerated work dynamics. Increasingly flexible workplaces and work schedules coupled with digitization will increase both resource optimization and sustainable efficiency.
